Agriculture is the backbone of Tien Giang Province, vital for the local economy and the livelihoods of thousands of farmers. However, this crucial sector faces numerous challenges, including climate change, water scarcity, crop diseases, and market instability. The Mekonglink ESG Living Lab, through its innovative Glocal Capstone Design program, aims to address these issues by combining local knowledge with global expertise. This initiative seeks to empower communities by introducing sustainable practices, improving agricultural productivity, and enhancing economic resilience. Join us in this journey to create a sustainable future for Tien Giang, Viet Nam and beyond, where collaboration and innovation pave the way for lasting change.

I. Understanding the Agricultural Landscape of Tien Giang, Viet Nam

A. The Vital Role of Agriculture in Tien Giang’s Economy

Agriculture is the backbone of Tien Giang Province, located in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta. The province is well-known for its fertile soil and a variety of crops like rice, coconut, and dragon fruit. For thousands of local residents, farming is not just a job but a way of life. It supports families, drives the local economy, and is vital for the region’s food security. However, Tien Giang’s agricultural sector faces several serious agriculture challenges that threaten its future sustainability.

B. Major Challenges Confronting Tien Giang’s Farmers

Tien Giang, a province in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam, is facing several significant challenges that are impacting its agricultural sector and the livelihoods of its farmers. Here are some of the major issues:

  1. Climate Change and Water Scarcity: The Mekong Delta, including Tien Giang, is experiencing a decline in annual water flow, estimated to be around 10% less than historical averages, according to a report by the Mekong River Commission in 2021. By 2050, Tien Giang could face a 20-30% reduction in rice yields due to climate change-induced water scarcity and salinity intrusion, as projected in a study published in the journal “Climate Risk Management” (2020).
  2. Crop Diseases Impacting Yields: The Brown spot disease could cause yield losses in dragon fruit of up to 30-50%, severely affecting farmers’ income, according to the Plant Protection Department of Vietnam in 2019.
  3. Economic Vulnerability Due to Market Instability: Over 80% of Tien Giang’s dragon fruit production is exported, highlighting the heavy dependence on international markets, as revealed by Vietnam Customs data from 2023. Only about 10% of agricultural products in Tien Giang are processed, limiting value addition and income potential for farmers, as indicated by a report by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (2021).
  4. Heatwaves and Saltwater Intrusion: A recent heatwave in Vietnam is worsening environmental conditions in the Mekong Delta region, causing grueling working conditions for farmers and cutting crop yields. Salinity rates are expected to reach 24 to 40 miles inland, while most plants can only cope with one gram of salini

C. Mekonglink’s ESG Living Lab: A Catalyst for Change

The Mekonglink ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Living Lab aims to tackle local agricultural challenges in Tien Giang by blending sustainable practices with both local and global expertise. This initiative empowers farmers to improve productivity and economic stability through community-driven solutions. It brings together local communities and international experts to create sustainable, socially responsible, and economically viable approaches. The Glocal Capstone Design program serves as the first step in this process, where global students collaborate with local communities to develop practical solutions tailored to specific local needs, laying the groundwork for future projects.

II. Innovative Solutions to Local Agricultural Problems

  • Smart Strategies to Combat Climate and Water Challenges

To address the dual issues of climate change and water scarcity, student teams from the Glocal Capstone Design program proposed innovative irrigation systems and sustainable water management practices. These include the use of smart irrigation systems that conserve water by monitoring soil moisture levels and applying just the right amount of water needed. Additionally, rainwater harvesting techniques were recommended to ensure a more reliable water supply, especially during the dry season.

  • Scientific and Innovative Treatment of Plant Diseases

Brown Spot Disease on Dragon Fruit Branches

Managing crop diseases like the Brown spot on dragon fruit requires both traditional knowledge and modern technology. The student teams suggested using pheromone traps to control pests that spread the disease. However, this approach needs to be implemented on a large scale for maximum effectiveness. Collaboration among experts, local farmers, and community members is essential to ensure the successful application of these methods, providing comprehensive disease control.

  • Creating New Economic Opportunities Through Value-Added Products

    2 min 2
“Tien Giang is a place with a variety of fruits containing many useful nutrients, so it has great potential when developing products from these fruits. However, because the output price of these fruit varieties depends a lot on the market, we need to develop a new product with more value thanks to the help of technology developed from Mekonglink.” – Dr. Le Thi Kim Loan, Head of Faculty of Agriculture and Food Technology, Tien Giang University.

Understanding the need to diversify income sources, the teams explored the development of value-added products from dragon fruit, such as cosmetics, natural dyes, and nutritional supplements. These products not only have a higher market value but also provide farmers with new revenue streams. By partnering with local businesses and using digital marketing strategies, these innovative products have successfully reached both local and international markets, offering greater economic stability to the farming community.

III. Core Values for the Tien Giang Community

The Mekonglink ESG Living Lab and Glocal Capstone Design program are laying the groundwork for transformative change in the Tien Giang community. While the project is still in its early stages, it has the potential to deliver significant long-term benefits if the community comes together with a shared commitment to innovation and collaboration.

  • Economic Empowerment: By focusing on sustainable farming practices and the development of value-added products, this initiative aims to help farmers enhance their incomes and reduce their reliance on unstable export markets. To achieve these goals, we need the active participation of local farmers and businesses who are willing to adopt new methods and explore innovative products.
  • Environmental Sustainability: The project promotes the use of smart irrigation systems and organic disease management techniques to conserve resources and protect the environment. However, realizing these environmental benefits requires the collective effort of the community and experts to implement these practices effectively.
  • Community Collaboration and Education: The success of the project depends on fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous learning. We encourage farmers, experts, and students to come together, share knowledge, and work towards building a more resilient agricultural sector in Tien Giang. This is a call to action for everyone to invest their time and effort into creating a sustainable future for our community.

By joining forces and committing to this vision, the Tien Giang community can unlock its full potential and build a brighter future for all. Your involvement and dedication are crucial to turning these aspirations into reality.

IV. Future Directions: Building on Success and Expanding Our Impact

Building on the successes achieved so far, Mekonglink plans to expand these sustainable practices beyond Tien Giang to other regions facing similar agricultural challenges. This expansion will focus on replicating effective water management techniques, such as smart irrigation and rainwater harvesting, which have proven successful in conserving water and enhancing crop yields. Additionally, the project aims to extend disease control methods like organic pest management and pheromone traps to protect crops more effectively across a wider area.

But we cannot do this alone. The expansion also depends on continuing to develop and market value-added products, such as dragon fruit-based cosmetics and health supplements, which have already opened new revenue streams for local farmers. By bringing these innovative products to new markets, we can help more communities achieve economic resilience and reduce their dependence on unstable export markets. To succeed, we need the active involvement of local farmers, businesses, and experts willing to embrace new methods and share their knowledge.

We invite all community members, local leaders, businesses, and agricultural experts to join us in this journey. Your participation is crucial to adapting these strategies to your unique local conditions and ensuring they deliver the maximum benefit. Together, we can expand this initiative, helping more communities overcome their challenges, protect their environment, and build a sustainable future.
