Advantages
With a geographical location stretching about 120 km, along the North bank of the Tien River, a branch of the Mekong River, Tien Giang is favored by nature in terms of climate, land, and freshwater resources to develop fruit gardens. Therefore, Tien Giang is the province with the largest fruit-growing area in the country with more than 84 thousand hectares as of 2023.
In the first quarter of 2024, the province exported 7,100 tons of fruit, with a turnover of 13.41 million USD, an increase of nearly 60% in volume and more than 62% in value. Regarding the market, vegetables and fruits, especially fruits, have been exported to many foreign markets, typically: China, the US, Canada, the EU, Australia, Japan, Korea, India, the Middle East, Africa, etc (source: tiengiang.gov.vn)
Difficulties
Besides the strengths in large production and export output, Tien Giang agricultural products still face many challenges when mainly exporting fresh fruits, and are heavily dependent on the Chinese consumption market.
According to statistics, the amount of processed fruits for export in Tien Giang only accounts for about 2% of the total annual harvest output. Although there are many types of fruits with high economic value such as durian, dragon fruit, grapefruit, etc, the processed products are not diverse, and the consumption market is not stable.
